Guide · Toploader sizing

What size toploader do I need? A card-by-card guide.

Toploader thickness is measured in points (pt) — one point is one thousandth of an inch. Match the rating to the card and it sits flat and secure; guess wrong and the card either won't seat or rattles loose. This guide maps real card products to the size that fits them.

The short answer: almost every base card, TCG card, and paper sports card takes a 35pt toploader. Chrome and premium stock take 55pt. Only relics, patches, and booklets need more.

TCG cards: Pokémon, Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh!, One Piece

Trading card game cards are thin — around 12pt for most modern stock. Sleeved, they sit comfortably in a 35pt toploader, the size we stock by the case in Canada.

Paper sports cards — the 35pt group

Standard paper stock runs 15–20pt. This is the largest group in the hobby by volume, and the reason 35pt is the size worth buying by the case.

Chrome and premium stock — 55pt

Chrome, Prizm, Mosaic, and Optic use a thicker laminated stock at roughly 28–35pt. They will force into a 35pt holder and risk bending; 55pt is the correct size.

Autographs, by stock type

An autograph does not change a card's thickness — the stock underneath does. Size to the card, not the signature.

What we stock in Canada

The Canadian store carries the size that fits the overwhelming majority of cards — 3"×4" 35pt — in a case of 1,000, paired with 1,000 pre-cut penny sleeves. That is 14¢ per protected card, priced in CAD and shipped from a Canadian warehouse with no duty, brokerage, or currency conversion at checkout. Sizes above 35pt ship from cardshellz.com.

What size toploader for Pokémon cards?

3"×4" 35pt. Pokémon cards are about 12pt thick, so a penny sleeve plus a 35pt toploader is the correct pairing. The same applies to Magic: The Gathering, Lorcana, Digimon, and One Piece.

What does 35pt mean on a toploader?

Points are thousandths of an inch, describing the card thickness the holder accepts. A 35pt toploader takes a card up to roughly 35/1000" thick — which covers a standard 15–20pt card inside a penny sleeve.

Do chrome cards fit in a 35pt toploader?

Not reliably. Chrome, Prizm, Optic, and Mosaic run 28–35pt on their own, so once sleeved they need a 55pt holder. Forcing a chrome card into a 35pt toploader risks bending it.

What size toploader for a jersey or patch card?

Jersey and relic cards generally need 100pt; standard patches need 130pt; jumbo patches and booklets need 180pt or more. Size to the thickest point of the card.

What size toploader for hockey cards?

Upper Deck Series 1 and 2 and O-Pee-Chee are standard paper stock at 15–20pt, so 35pt. Young Guns on canvas stock and other premium inserts run thicker and take 55pt.

Will a graded slab fit in a toploader?

No. Graded slabs are far thicker than any toploader rating and already carry their own rigid case. Toploaders are for raw cards.
